NXPO participates in meetings of Climate Technology Centre and Network

วันที่เผยแพร่ 3 April 2023

NXPO President Dr. Kitipong Promwong, Assistant to the President Dr. Surachai Sathitkunarat, and Director of Sustainability Policy Dr. Saravanee Singtong took part in the 26th Meeting of the Technology Executive Committee and the Joint Session of the Technology Executive Committee and the Advisory Board of the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) held during 21-24 March 2023 in Korea. NXPO serves as Thailand’s national designated entity in CTCN, which is a technology mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, (UNFCCC).

The meeting and joint session deliberated on multiple issues that present opportunities for Thailand. The 2023-2027 rolling workplan of the TEC, for example, will focus on supporting countries to meet their nationally determined contributions (NDCs), expanding the role of CTCN to facilitate international collaboration on technology development and transfer to underpin climate action, global stocktaking for the upcoming COP28 and finance mechanisms.

During the meeting, Dr. Kitipong made a statement on the Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) Project. Thailand completed its first TNA study in 2010 and stood to benefit tremendously from the project. The TNA report was used in the formulations of Climate Change Master Plan 2015-2050, Thailand’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution and the National Adaptation Plan (NAP). The plan to revise Thailand’s TNA has been approved thanks to the support of the United Nations Environment Programme Copenhagen Climate Centre, the Global Environmental Fund (GEF) and TEC. The 2nd edition of TNA will need a clear objective, whether it will be used to support NDC or to assist the area-based action plan, particularly the industrial consortium which is a main driver of net zero emissions at the provincial level. It should be noted that an area-based action plan is vital for driving net zero emissions as it would complement the policy strategy.

NXPO will report the conclusions from the meeting and joint session to the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) – Thailand’s national focal point on climate change, and coordinate with relevant agencies to execute projects and initiatives derived from the meeting.
