The NXPO team was led by Assoc. Prof. Wongkot Wongsapai, Vice President of NXPO; Dr. Saravanee Singtong, Director of the Sustainability Policy Division; and Dr. Nataporn Chanvarasuth, Strategist 3. FTI was represented by Mr. Pidtiphat Manbuphachat, Chairman of the Institute of Agro-based Industries and Vice Chairman of FTI; Mr. Chalerm Kokanutaporn, Vice Chairman of the Institute of Agro-based Industries; Ms. Suangrawee Khunthanakarn, Director of the Water, Environment and Climate Change Institute; and Ms. Laddawan Rachuratchata, Director of the Institute of Agro-based Industries.

The Institute of Agro-based Industries presented the policy framework “The New Chapter of Thai Industry: Empowering Growth with 5I,” which lays the foundation for a new phase of growth for Thailand’s industrial sector by connecting industry needs and challenges with research, innovation, and policy to shape the country’s development direction. The 5I strategy provides a policy framework linking industrial development across multiple dimensions, including technology, innovation, trade, infrastructure, and sustainability. Its key objective is to enable Thai industries to adapt effectively and remain competitive in the global market over the long term.

Assoc. Prof. Wongkot said that NXPO places importance on gathering and analyzing data and challenges from various sectors to develop policy recommendations in higher education, science, research, and innovation to support national development. NXPO seeks to connect human capital, technology, and innovation development with research agencies, the industrial sector, and relevant regulatory agencies to ensure that knowledge and innovation are translated into practical applications and can be further scaled up at the national level.

The discussion focused on two key areas: 1. advancing the Green Enterprise Indicator (GEI) toward further development and practical application; and 2. developing innovations to add value to by-products from the agricultural and industrial sectors, particularly digestate and biochar, under the concepts of End-of-Waste and the Circular Economy.

Dr. Saravanee said that GEI was designed to enable enterprises to assess their sustainability status before progressing to more complex standards and requirements that may require significant investment. The tool will enable enterprises to understand their current status, compare assessment results with previous data, and use the findings to identify areas for strategic operational improvement.

Driving Green Transformation in the business sector requires self-assessment tools that are easy to understand, practical to use, and capable of linking assessment results with various support mechanisms. GEI is connected with key sustainability concepts, including Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and Circular Economy (CE), while also incorporating an innovation dimension to encourage Thai enterprises to make greater use of innovation. The assessment reflects environmental, social, economic, and governance dimensions, as well as resource use and businesses’ adaptive capacity.

GEI therefore has the potential to serve as a “common tool” linking enterprise assessments with support measures, including incentives, sources of funding, recognition within the supply chains of large enterprises that require suppliers to account for Scope 3 emissions, and opportunities to expand businesses into green markets.

Another key topic was innovation to add value to by-products from the agricultural and industrial sectors, particularly digestate and biochar. These efforts are aligned with the Circular Economy concept, which seeks to shift the perspective from “waste that needs to be disposed of” to “valuable resources or new products.”

These materials are already being used in agriculture in some areas. However, limitations related to their legal status, certification, and product standards remain. As a result, their utilization and commercial scale-up still need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis, creating challenges for businesses in long-term planning and investment.

Advancing green industries requires a system-wide approach, rather than addressing standard assessment, financial support, innovation development, and market creation separately. These mechanisms should instead be connected across the entire process, from enterprise self-assessment and capacity building to access to incentives and financing, recognition within supply chains, and commercial scale-up.

For the next phase of implementation, the meeting emphasized the importance of selecting pilot cases from sectors that are ready to participate, have established market demand, and can demonstrate clear outcomes. This should be accompanied by clearly defining the roles of relevant agencies, developing credible standards, and designing incentive measures that provide tangible benefits to businesses. Data from the industrial sector should be used as the basis for monitoring and evaluation, enabling the mechanisms to be refined before being expanded to other industrial sectors.

The cooperation between NXPO and FTI represents an important step in connecting knowledge in higher education, science, research, and innovation with the real needs of the business sector. This collaboration will support Thai enterprises in adapting, strengthening their competitiveness, and advancing toward Green Transformation and the Circular Economy, while preparing them for global trade and market trends that increasingly place greater emphasis on sustainability.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[30

post-50923","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-en
https://www.nxpo.or.th/th/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/NXPO-and-FTI-strengthen-Thai-agriculture-and-food-enterprises-for-global-competitiveness-1.jpg
https://www.nxpo.or.th/th/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/NXPO-and-FTI-strengthen-Thai-agriculture-and-food-enterprises-for-global-competitiveness-1.jpg
["GET
