Amid the growing impacts of climate change, one important pathway forward is for all sectors to embrace the green transition, particularly businesses, which are key drivers of the national economy. This raises an important question: How can businesses determine whether they can be classified as green enterprises? The Green Enterprises Indicator (GEI) provides an answer to this question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GEI was developed based on the concepts of the circular economy and green economy. It enables businesses to assess their current status and identify their strengths. The results are presented on a dashboard covering environmental, social, innovation, and value chain dimensions, providing guidance for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in preparing to implement ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development of GEI began during the development of Thailand\u2019s Circular Economy Vision 2030 (CE Vision 2030). At the time, many MSMEs recognized the need to adapt to carbon-related requirements, standards, and customer requirements, but did not know how or where to start. If businesses are unable to adapt in time, they may lose business opportunities and face the risk of being excluded from supply chains. NXPO and its partners therefore developed the BCG Indicator, a tool to support businesses in their transition toward sustainability, which was subsequently further developed into GEI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GEI is designed to help Thai enterprises overcome business constraints, enabling them to grow and achieve strong business performance while advancing sustainability. As trade measures incorporating sustainability considerations become increasingly stringent, sustainability has become an important element of business strategies that can help reduce costs and create new business opportunities. In the future, ESG practices will no longer be limited to large companies but will increasingly extend to their business partners and MSMEs throughout supply chains. GEI therefore helps MSMEs prepare for these changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NXPO serves as an intermediary, connecting policy challenges with practical tools. The development process began by gathering the challenges faced by businesses and conducting a systematic analysis of the green transition in Thailand. The analysis found that ESG is an important tool for creating green supply chains for small businesses and those that are not yet ready for the transition, as well as for developing green suppliers, which are an important component of international trade. This led NXPO to collaborate with standards organizations, experts, industry representatives, and users to jointly develop, test, and improve the indicators. GEI was subsequently elevated to a national standard as the 12th Thai Conformity Assessment Standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GEI resulted from collaboration among multiple sectors, ensuring that the standard is both academically credible and practical for businesses to apply. Two principles guided the design of GEI: 1) the indicators must have an academic foundation aligned with international approaches and standards; and 2) they must not be so complex that Thai businesses are unable to apply them. GEI comprises 68 indicators covering three dimensions: environmental, social, and economic and governance. It also categorizes business development into four levels, ranging from the Initiation Level to the level at which businesses can generate tangible impacts. GEI therefore serves as a common tool that businesses can use by starting at the level appropriate to the size and circumstances of their operations. Businesses do not need to address every aspect at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, GEI helps unlock opportunities for green enterprises in three key areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Helping businesses understand their status, strengths, and gaps. This enables them to plan which areas to improve or invest in first, particularly MSMEs that may not yet have sufficient personnel, budgets, or data systems to fully implement ESG practices. GEI therefore serves as an initial stepping stone for MSMEs to establish systems, collect data, and improve their performance across the environmental, social, economic, and governance dimensions before progressing toward more advanced requirements or standards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Providing businesses with data and evidence to communicate with business partners, investors, and consumers. This is particularly important for MSMEs that are part of the supply chains of large companies. In the future, business partners may look beyond price, quality, and delivery time and place greater emphasis on sustainability-related information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Providing the public sector, financial institutions, and large companies with a common framework that can be used to develop businesses within supply chains, design financial instruments, and establish support measures appropriate to the level of readiness of each business.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    GEI therefore not only helps MSMEs adapt to relevant requirements but also helps them maintain their position in supply chains and creates opportunities to connect with new markets and business partners in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    NXPO aims to promote the adoption of GEI as a tool for connecting businesses with support measures and funding sources, enabling large companies to build stronger and more sustainable supply chains while ensuring that MSMEs are not left behind. GEI can help MSMEs maintain their status as business partners, enhance their credibility, and turn sustainability into an \u201copportunity\u201d to build genuine competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
