Prof. Wongkot Wongsapai, Vice President of NXPO, delivered a special lecture titled \u201cHigher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Policy on High-Temperature Plasma Clean Energy Technology\u201d at the Strategic Meeting of the Hub of Talents for Plasma Technology (HPlas), organized by the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) on 7 September 2026 at Rama Gardens Hotel, Bangkok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assoc. Prof. Wongkot highlighted that the world is entering an era of increasingly close convergence between energy and technology. The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies, and data centers is driving demand for stable and reliable electricity, creating new challenges for national energy security. He emphasized that Thailand must prepare for frontier technologies to strengthen its technological capabilities and avoid potential dependence on foreign technology providers in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thailand\u2019s draft Power Development Plan (PDP2026) sets out the direction for the first 12-year planning period (2026\u20132037), with a total of 50,900 megawatts of new generation capacity. In addition to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, the plan includes 300-megawatt small modular reactor (SMR) fission technology as an alternative power generation option. Although fusion energy has not yet been directly incorporated into the national power development plan, it represents a long-term strategic opportunity for Thailand to develop a clean, low-carbon energy source with unlimited potential. The development of plasma and fusion technologies can also generate significant technology spillovers, with applications across a wide range of industries. These include plasma etching and surface coating; advanced chip manufacturing for the electronics and semiconductor industries; advanced medical device development; plasma-based sterilization for medical applications; electric propulsion systems for space and satellite applications; pollution treatment; and technologies to extend the shelf life of agricultural products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To advance this vision, TINT and NXPO have jointly developed the draft 25-Year Fusion Technology Development Roadmap (Thailand Fusion-2050), with the goal of positioning Thailand as an ASEAN Fusion Technology Hub. The roadmap sets several long-term targets, including developing 50 specialized technical personnel and 500 technical support personnel by 2037; establishing Thailand Tokamak-2 (TT-2); supporting the development of 100 businesses across the fusion technology supply chain and generating 50 intellectual property assets; and creating an estimated THB 15 billion in annual economic value from fusion technology development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From an energy perspective, high-temperature plasma technology represents a critical pathway toward fusion energy technology. As an important frontier technology with strong potential for safe and sustainable energy generation, it is driving research and development efforts worldwide.
