The discussions reflected diverse perspectives on government policies and priorities, technology and electric vehicles, autonomous driving and AI, energy and climate change, social and demographic changes, and the development of increasingly connected and integrated Mobility systems.

Participants also explored possible mobility futures in 2040 for each economy through four future scenarios: Fragmented Mobility, Technology Without Trust, Human-Centred Transition, and Trusted Autonomous Ecosystem. These scenarios demonstrated that the future of mobility could take multiple forms and provided an important starting point for applying foresight approaches to systematically explore possible futures.

Ms. Jirapan Christian Linares, NXPO Policy Developer, presented “Foresight and Smart Mobility,” linking strategic foresight with perspectives on the future of transportation and mobility systems. She highlighted the distinction between forecasting and foresight to demonstrate their different approaches to understanding the future. While forecasting generally seeks to predict a likely future outcome, foresight explores multiple possible futures, including potential uncertainties, opportunities and risks. Ms. Jirapan introduced the foresight process through the “SEE to THINK to ACT” framework. The framework covers identifying signals and changes through horizon scanning, analyzing trends and drivers, exploring possible futures through scenario planning, and translating analytical findings into directions and actions in the present. She also explained the distinctions among signals, trends and drivers, enabling participants to systematically connect current developments with the forces that may shape the future.

In the context of smart mobility, the presentation emphasized that the future of transportation should not be considered solely in terms of technologies or vehicles. Instead, it should be viewed as a mobility ecosystem that connects users, vehicles, infrastructure, energy, data, digital systems, business models and policies. The STEEP analysis framework was used to examine social, technological, economic, environmental and political factors, while also considering key technologies such as AI, IoT, big data, connected and autonomous vehicles, EVs and mobility-as-a-service (MaaS). The discussion also covered energy, climate change, data governance and cybersecurity.

Following the presentation, representatives from each economy participated in a collaborative assessment process to jointly analyze and review key issues related to smart mobility. Participants considered differences in rationale and perspectives and worked together to reach conclusions on various topics, including general statement about smart mobility, cybersecurity and data governance, energy transition and environmental sustainability, and smart traffic and vehicle intelligence. This process built on the foresight exercise by fostering dialogue and collaboration among APEC economies.

The exchange also covered key technologies and issues in the smart mobility domain, including AI, V2X, ITS, EVs, energy transition, data governance, cybersecurity and digital standards, as well as technical cooperation measures and needs identified by each economy. Particular attention was given to territorial equity, accessibility, public engagement, emerging risks and institutional barriers to support the development of smart mobility and regional cooperation.

The Future of Smart Mobility project aims to strengthen the capacity of APEC economies to apply technology foresight, trend analysis and emerging smart mobility technologies, while promoting regional cooperation and cross-border connectivity. It seeks to translate knowledge, trend analysis, case studies and outcomes from the foresight process into future scenarios, policy recommendations and technology roadmaps, supporting the transition toward transportation systems that use resources efficiently and appropriately across the APEC region.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[30
1821,1841,3204
post-50094","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-en","tag-apecctf-en","tag-foresight-en","tag-smart-mobility-en
https://www.nxpo.or.th/th/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/NXPO-and-APEC-CTF-join-APEC-Future-of-Smart-Mobility-Workshop.jpg
https://www.nxpo.or.th/th/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/NXPO-and-APEC-CTF-join-APEC-Future-of-Smart-Mobility-Workshop.jpg
["GET
