On 9 April 2020, NXPO hosted the first telemeeting with leading experts from various different sectors to discuss scenario planning for social and economic recovery from COVID-19 for Thailand. The goal is to design optimal measures that would lead to rapid recovery as well as the development of resilience to future crises.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining the panel of experts were Dr. Pichet Durongkaveroj, Former Minister of Science and Technology and Former Minister of Digital Economy and Society; Prof. Dr. Naksitte Coovattanachai, NXPO Advisor; Mr. Kan Trakulhoon, Former President of the Siam Cement Public Company Limited; Dr. Somkiat Tangkitvanich, President of Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI); Mr. Kalin Sarasin, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Silaporn Buasai, Member of Executive Committee of Program Management Unit; and Ms. Puangrat Asavapisit, Former Director-General of the Intellectual Property Department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting was of the view that the spread of COVID-19 would likely continue for another 18 months. The pressing issue is how to prevent the COVID-19 second wave once the emergency decree is lifted after 30 April. Science and technology can play an important role in identifying evidence- and science-based measures\/practices to prevent the spread such as the carrying capacity of public vehicles to support social distancing practice and taxis to roll down windows for good ventilation, for instance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In term of economy, agriculture and food sectors will play a key role in the economic recovery. Technology and innovation should be employed to boost the productivity and efficiency. Tourism industry will need to focus on high quality tourism and promoting secondary cities and communities as new tourist destinations. The government would also need to create more jobs in upcountry to accommodate people returning to their hometown after getting laid off from their jobs in the cities due to COVID-19 effect on the economy.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus far, education sector has made adjustment considerably well with online education and supporting infrastructure and platforms provided by the government. Challenges to overcome included how to conduct laboratory session and design proper learning media for each age group, as well as get parents to be technologically equipped to support their children\u2019s online education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information and suggestions from this meeting will be incorporated into the development of COVID-19 recovery plans that NXPO is taking lead.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
